Misspent Youth
NFS 2010-2020 One of a kind
1” x 7” x 18”
Wood, steel, brass and paper
This book was shaped and bound in walnut boards to be a functional replacement for a broken handle on a vintage Disston handsaw. The writing and illustrations describe the various jobs that make up my work history, starting in the 60’s and going to the 90’s, when I began working in animation. The jobs included library clerk, road repair/flagman, busboy, cab driver, art teacher, pipe packer, steel worker, farm laborer, bookstore clerk, carpenter, roofer, illustrator/designer at a lefty magazine; and concluded with background painter for animation. The bulk of my wasted years were spent doing carpentry, hence the saw as the vessel for this content. Also sprinkled throughout are some hair-raising hitchhiking/cab driving stories from the 70’s. Because at times the material becomes quite personal, it functions as would a locked diary. There are still some blank pages.

Many years ago this artist placed a singles ad in a weekly newspaper. This book celebrates 25 years of happy marriage thanks to that fun advertising experiment. In a bit of whimsy, image and text create irreverent pairings of singles pick-up lines with intimate portraits of abandoned furniture found cast aside like a bad romance on city streets.

Steep, snowy slopes are loaded terrains of uncertainty. Hidden layers and changing variables make stability difficult to predict. Stability depends on the cohesion between one particle to another and one layer to another. If the force of gravity outweighs cohesion, a slide is inevitable. The story begins in the precarious 1930s, high in the Rockies.

I want looking at this book to feel like an acquaintance stops me on the street and ask how I am doing and I take a deep breath and say everything I’m really feeling.
